Video sharing

Audio, video, and visual forms of communication add much value to development communication and knowledge sharing. They add spice to normal text presentations and can be used to document and express the voices of participants. Many development agencies are putting their videos online (see some examples)

Prince Deh from Ghana explain why video is important:

Nowadays, almost anyone can record video and publish it on their web sites. (see explanation and illustration by Beth Kanter).

Sometimes described as video blogging - or 'vlogging' - video sharing refers to websites or software where a user can distribute their video clips. Some services may charge, but most offer free services.

Popular services include YouTube, Blip.tv, and Google video; OneWorldTV specializes in developmental video content. (see full list of services)

Creating such videos is increasingly easy - many mobile phones and cameras allow short video's to be made. Once saved and edited, these can be uploaded to the Internet. From there they can be tagged, promoted, embedded in most web sites and included in feeds and podcasts.

Examples:

  • The 2008 Davos meeting asked people to record their answers to a question: "What one thing do you think that countries, companies or individuals must do to make the world a better place in 2008?"

  • In 2007, Joitske Hulsebosch compiled a handy guide to 'vlogging' an event.
